This is the question most websites skip entirely. It's the one that most determines whether your installation is a joy or a maintenance burden.
Unfilled Travertine
Natural pores and voids intact. Beautiful in dry climates. In Florida — especially around pools — those natural voids trap water, algae, dirt, and insects.
Florida problem:
After one rainy season, unfilled travertine around a pool deck can develop algae growth in the voids. After three years, you're pressure-washing monthly.
Best for: Dry climate interior applications only
Filled Travertine
Voids filled with grout or epoxy before finishing. Significantly easier to maintain, resists algae accumulation, and seals more effectively.

Travertine Thickness — Why Getting This Wrong Is an Expensive Mistake
3CM (1.25 inches) — Our Standard
For pool decks, patios, and driveways where vehicles may cross. Handles vehicle weight without cracking, provides better thermal mass, resists edge chipping when cut for borders. This is what we specify on every project.
2CM — Limited Applications Only
Interior applications or vertical cladding only. Using 2CM dry-set on a driveway — which some budget contractors do — results in cracking within 12-18 months. We've re-done many of these projects in Sarasota and Bradenton.
⚠ The Quote Comparison Trap
If one quote is significantly cheaper, the first question is: what thickness is specified? 3CM legitimately costs more than 2CM. If a contractor doesn't specify thickness in their quote, ask — and get it in writing.
