Travertine Paver Installation in Tampa

The coolest surface you can walk on barefoot in August — and the one honest trade-off nobody mentions before you buy.

Inland exposure · Hillsborough County

Why travertine behaves differently in Tampa

Clay-heavy soil holds water, and a travertine deck that sits on a base without a drainage path stays damp long after the storm passes. The stone tolerates it; the base under it does not.

What that means for your deck: Inland exposure allows the standard cycle — reseal every two to three years, adjusted for how much shade and irrigation the deck actually gets.

We install travertine throughout Tampa:

  • South Tampa
  • Hyde Park
  • Westchase
  • New Tampa
  • Davis Islands
  • Carrollwood

Why Travertine

What matters most on a inland deck

No salt load inland, so heat and service life are what the decision turns on.

It stays cool enough to walk on

Travertine runs meaningfully cooler underfoot than poured concrete and cooler than porcelain in direct midday sun — published comparisons put it roughly 20–30°F below concrete and 15–20°F below porcelain. The reason is structural: a micro-porous stone holds thousands of tiny air pockets that dissipate thermal energy instead of storing it. On an unshaded August deck that is the difference between a pool that gets used and one that gets looked at.

It lasts on a generational timescale

Natural stone carries a 50-to-100-year-plus service life. The limiting factor on a travertine deck is almost never the stone; it is the base it was set on and whether the seal was maintained.

Individual units can be replaced

A cracked or stained unit lifts out and gets replaced. A poured or coated surface has no equivalent repair — damage there means resurfacing the whole field, which is why the cheaper surface tends to cost more across fifteen years.

The honest trade-off: it needs sealing

Travertine is porous, and that porosity is exactly what makes it cool underfoot. The cost of that property is a maintenance cycle — coastal decks seal within six months of installation and annually after, inland decks every two to three years. Porcelain needs none of this. If a zero-maintenance surface matters more to you than surface temperature, we will tell you to choose porcelain, and we install that too.

Where travertine belongs in Tampa

  • Pool decks

The application it was made for. Cool underfoot, ADA wet-slip rated in brushed and tumbled finishes, unaffected by chlorine when sealed.

  • Patios and lanais

Continuity between the screened area and the open deck, with the same surface temperature advantage where there is no shade.

  • Driveways

Possible, and increasingly asked for, but it changes the base specification entirely — vehicle load needs depth that a pool deck does not.

  • Walkways and entries

Where the material reads as architecture rather than paving, which is most of why people choose it in the first place.

Questions

Travertine in Tampa, answered

How often does travertine need sealing in Tampa?+

Tampa is an inland exposure, so the standard cycle applies: reseal every two to three years, adjusted for how much direct sun and irrigation the deck actually receives.

Is travertine hotter than porcelain around a pool?+

No — the opposite. Published comparisons put travertine roughly 15–20°F cooler than porcelain and 20–30°F cooler than poured concrete in direct midday sun. Its micro-porous structure dissipates heat rather than storing it, which is the main reason it remains the default choice for unshaded Florida pool decks.

Does chlorine or salt water damage travertine?+

Not when it is sealed and maintained. Sealed travertine does not degrade from chlorine splash or salt air. Damage happens when the seal is allowed to lapse, which is why the sealing schedule is part of the specification rather than an afterthought.

Is travertine slippery when wet?+

Brushed and tumbled finishes exceed ADA wet-surface slip-resistance requirements, which is why those are the finishes used around pools. A polished travertine is a different product and does not belong on a pool deck.

Travertine or porcelain — which should I choose?+

Travertine if surface temperature matters most and you accept a sealing cycle. Porcelain if zero maintenance matters most and you accept a warmer surface. Both outlast concrete by a wide margin. We install both and will tell you which fits your deck rather than which we would rather sell.

Do you install travertine pavers in Tampa?+

Yes. We are a Hardscape.com certified installer working across Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough, Orange, Lee and Pasco Counties, and travertine pool decks, patios and driveways are a core part of what we build. Highly recommend! EC Paver was able to get me scheduled quickly at a fair price. They did a great job on my pavers and offered to return if we had any issues.

I just have installed the "Da Vinci" Italian Porcelain tiles by EC Paver Solutions in my driveway, and I could not be happier with the results. Diego and his team did fantastic job. They finished the project on time we agreed on and they clean after the work was done. Great job done!

We found EC Paver Solutions via our porcelain paver manufacturer and hired them to do a repair of our porcelain paver driveway that was installed in July of 2024. It was installed by a crew that I was told were trained in installing this product. They were not. For the better part of 2 years we struggled with several other supposed paver sub-contractors who could never get it right. Today we’ve finally got the driveway we wanted. Thank you Diogo and crew for your expertise, attention to detail and for listening to us. If you’re in need of a unique paver solution aside from the brick pavers almost everyone uses, call Diogo. You will be glad you did!

Highly recommend EC Pavers. Diogo is great to work with and his crew is fast and very detailed. They completed a large project around our pool using 3cm ceramic pavers and mosaic tiles wrapping the spa and waterline of the pool. A few months later, they came back to do the driveway also in the same ceramic pavers. The work was done promptly and everything was handled in a professional and efficient manner. Diogo has come back a few times to take care of minor items and is always available to address any concerns. I’m very happy with the work and highly recommend them to anyone.
