Paver Patterns
Paver Pattern Layouts for Florida Homes
The pattern a paver is laid in isn't just an aesthetic choice — it changes how the surface performs under load, foot traffic, and Florida's wet-dry cycles. On driveways especially, the wrong pattern can undermine an otherwise solid installation: herringbone is specified because its interlocking geometry distributes vehicle load across multiple pavers, while patterns with long parallel joints running with the direction of travel are more prone to shifting over time. Below is a visual guide to the six layouts we install most across Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Tampa, and Orlando.
Herringbone 45°
The engineering standard for driveways. Each paver interlocks in a V with its neighbors, so no joint line ever runs parallel to the direction of travel — the geometry itself resists the shear force a rolling tire creates.
Best for: Driveways, high-traffic areas
Recommended materials: 3CM porcelain, brick, concrete pavers
Herringbone 90°
The same interlocking V geometry as the 45° layout, squared instead to the edges of the space. Just as structurally strong, with a more formal, classic look that reads well against straight architectural lines.
Best for: Driveways, patios, walkways
Recommended materials: 3CM porcelain, brick, concrete pavers
Running Bond
Rows offset by half a paver, exactly like traditional brickwork. Simple to install, timeless to look at, and a natural fit for rectangular paver formats where you want a clean, structured field.
Best for: Walkways, patios, pool decks
Recommended materials: Concrete pavers, brick, porcelain planks
Stack Bond (Grid)
Every paver aligns edge-to-edge in a perfect grid — no offset, no interlock. The result is a clean, contemporary field that puts the material itself, not the pattern, on display.
Best for: Modern pool decks, patios
Recommended materials: Large-format porcelain
Versailles / French Pattern
A repeating module built from four different stone sizes, arranged so the joint lines never fall into a repetitive grid. This is the layout behind the classic travertine patio look found across Mediterranean-style Florida homes.
Best for: Patios, pool decks
Recommended materials: Travertine, natural stone
Basketweave
Pairs of pavers alternate between horizontal and vertical orientation, mimicking the over-under weave of a basket. A warm, traditional pattern that works especially well at smaller scale — accents, borders, and classic patios.
Best for: Patios, accents, walkways
Recommended materials: Brick, concrete pavers
