Pool Deck Paver
Installation in Florida
Porcelain and travertine pool decks — slip-resistant, pool-chemical resistant, barefoot cool. Installed by the only Hardscape.com Certified contractor in your county.
Florida's Most Demanding Surface
Your Pool Deck Takes More Abuse Than Any Other Outdoor Surface
Pool decks in Florida face a unique combination of stressors: constant UV exposure, daily wet-dry cycles, chlorine and saltwater chemical contact, barefoot traffic, sunscreen and body oil, algae pressure, and heat expansion cycles year-round. Not every paving material is engineered to handle all of these simultaneously.
Porcelain pavers handle all of them with zero maintenance. Travertine handles them beautifully with periodic sealing. Concrete pavers and brick require frequent attention and degrade faster in heavy pool chemical environments.
As the only Hardscape.com Certified installer in Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough, Orange, and Lee Counties, we've installed pool decks across Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Tampa, and Orlando — and we know exactly which specifications, products, and installation methods perform in Florida pool environments.

Homeowners who want zero maintenance and modern aesthetics

Travertine Pavers
Pros

Timeless, organic beauty
Natural variation makes repairs less visible
Cons
✗ Requires professional sealing every 2-3 years
✗ Porous — pool chemicals can etch unsealed surface

Brick / Concrete Pavers
Pros
Lower cost
Wide color selection
Familiar material
Cons

Budget-conscious projects where pool chemical exposure is minimal
Full guideOur Honest Recommendation
Choose Porcelain if:
- You want zero maintenance — ever
- You have a saltwater pool (salt + chlorine combination)
- You want a contemporary, precise look
- You plan to sell the home within 10 years (higher perceived value)
- You prefer not to think about annual sealing schedules
Choose Travertine if:
- You prefer a natural, organic look
- You're comfortable with sealing every 2-3 years
- Budget is the primary consideration
- You want the warmest-looking outdoor space
- You prefer a material that looks better as it ages

Safety First
R11, R12, DCOF — What Pool Deck Slip Ratings Actually Mean
Most contractors list slip ratings without explaining them. Here's what they actually mean for your family's safety.
Interior only
Smooth or polished — not suitable for any wet outdoor area. Never for pool decks.
Wet areas — light use
Acceptable for covered patios or areas with minimal water exposure. Not ideal for pool decks.
Pool decks ✓
Minimum rating for pool decks per industry standard. All Hardscape.com outdoor products meet R11 or higher. Good grip when wet.
Commercial pools ✓✓
Commercial pools, waterparks, high-traffic areas. Maximum grip — even on soapy or chemical-treated surfaces.
DCOF > 0.60 — The ANSI Standard
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI A137.1) requires DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) above 0.60 for all wet exterior surfaces. Every Hardscape.com outdoor porcelain product we install exceeds this standard. When reviewing competitor quotes, ask for the specific DCOF rating — not just “slip resistant” marketing language.
Heat Management
Color Is the Most Important Decision for Florida Pool Deck Comfort
Light-colored pavers in Florida afternoon sun stay 20-30°F cooler underfoot than dark concrete. That's the difference between comfortable barefoot walking and an unwalkable surface at 2pm in August.
Snow White / Ivory
Coolest — reflects most heat
Light Grey / Silver
Very cool — high reflectance
Beige / Sandstone
Cool — good reflectance
Medium Grey
Moderate heat absorption
Dark Grey / Basalt
High heat — uncomfortable barefoot
Black
Extreme heat — very uncomfortable
Dark pool decks are the #1 complaint we hear from homeowners who chose aesthetics over function. Always test your color choice in direct Florida sun before committing.

Light Grey — Recommended
20-30°F cooler than dark concrete
Installation Options
Three Ways We Install Pool Deck Pavers
Over Existing Concrete
Pavers mortar-set directly on existing pool slab. Most cost-effective option when existing slab is sound. Avoids the cost of demolition entirely. Slab must have proper drainage slope and no structural cracks.
No demolition cost
Extremely stable base
Fastest installation
Best for:
Most residential pools with intact concrete decks
New Base Installation
Full excavation, base preparation, and installation on new substrate. Required when existing concrete is cracked, poorly drained, or at wrong elevation.
Complete control of drainage and slope
Fresh start
Best long-term outcome
Best for:
New construction or pools with failed/cracked decks
Pedestal System
Adjustable pedestals over existing concrete. Creates perfect level surface regardless of slab condition. Allows drainage beneath. Easy access to plumbing. Best for screened enclosures.
Level regardless of slab
Perfect drainage beneath
Access to pool plumbing
Ideal for screened cages
Best for:
Screened pool enclosures and uneven slabs
