Every Path Tells a Story
A Walkway Is More Than a Path — It's the First Thing Your Home Says
A walkway sets the tone for the entire property before a visitor reaches the front door. It controls erosion on Florida's sandy soil. It creates safe, defined routes between home, pool, garden, and street. And it connects every other outdoor surface into a cohesive design.
Not all walkways are the same project. A front entry walkway has different design priorities than a garden path. A pool connection walkway has different safety requirements than a side yard access path. Getting the right material, pattern, and specification for each type is where most generic paver contractors fall short.
EC Paver Solutions installs every type of walkway across Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Tampa, and Orlando — with the specifications written in your quote and the Hardscape.com certification that ensures the installation is done correctly.

By Application Type
5 Types of Walkways — Each Requires a Different Approach
Most contractors treat all walkways as one service. We don't. The right design, material, and specification depends entirely on where the walkway goes and what it connects.
Highest VisibilityFront Entry Walkway
The path from street, driveway, or gate to the front door. The first thing every visitor sees. Sets the tone for the entire property.
Specifications
- Width: 4ft minimum, 5-6ft for luxury properties
- Material: porcelain, travertine, or brick to match home architecture
- Pattern: running bond, herringbone, or large-format stacked
- Lighting: in-ground or border lighting often added at this stage
Design Note
Should connect visually to driveway material and front door architecture. Symmetrical border patterns work well for formal homes; organic running bond for coastal and contemporary.
Landscape IntegrationGarden Path
Paths through garden areas, around planters, between outdoor zones. Often curved. Connects functional areas while creating visual interest.
Specifications
- Width: 3-4ft typical for garden paths
- Material: natural stone, brick, or small-format pavers for curves
- Pattern: irregular stepping stones, running bond, or flagstone-style
- Curved paths: use 4x8 or 6x6 pavers for minimal cutting
Design Note
Garden paths work best with materials that complement plantings — travertine with tropical, brick with cottage gardens, natural stone with native landscapes. Curves are common; we design them before laying to minimize material waste.
R11 RequiredPool Connection Walkway
The path from home to pool deck. In the splash zone. Must meet pool deck slip resistance standards (R11+). Should match or complement pool deck material.
Specifications
- Slip rating: R11+ minimum — same as pool deck specification
- Material: should match or complement pool deck exactly
- Drainage: slope away from home, toward pool drainage system
- Border: consider coping-style border at pool deck junction
Design Note
This walkway lives in the splash zone and carries wet bare feet — slip resistance is non-negotiable. We specify the same product as the pool deck or a complementary piece from the same line to maintain visual continuity.
Functional PrioritySide Yard Access
Side yard access paths from front to back, around the house. Often narrow, sometimes the most practical walkway on the property. Prevents erosion and mud in Florida rain.
Specifications
- Width: 3ft minimum for comfortable passage with equipment
- Material: concrete or brick pavers — practical over premium
- Pattern: simple running bond — functional, efficient to install
- Drainage: critical for side yards that collect runoff
Design Note
Side yard walkways are functional first. Budget-conscious material choices are appropriate here — concrete pavers in a simple pattern provide the erosion control and firm footing the space needs without premium cost.
Curb Appeal ROIDriveway-to-Door Entry
The short connection from driveway to front door when no direct walkway exists. High ROI improvement — transforms the arrival experience.
Specifications
- Width: 4-5ft to match driveway aesthetic
- Material: match driveway or use complementary accent material
- Pattern: can use contrasting pattern/border for visual interest
- Often combined with driveway project for material consistency
Design Note
When built as part of a driveway project, material consistency is the priority. When added separately, a complementary accent material with shared color tone creates an intentional, designed look that reads as planned, not afterthought.
The Question Nobody Answers
How to Make a Curved Paver Walkway Without Cutting Every Piece
Curved walkways are one of the most-searched questions in walkway installation — and one of the least-answered by local contractors. Here's how we actually do it.
Small-format pavers (our preferred)
✓ Recommended4x8 or 6x6 brick pavers allow gradual curves with natural joint variation handling the radius. Minimal cutting — only at the very outer and inner edges. The small size makes curves elegant, not forced.
Variable joint spacing
✓ Good for gentle curvesSlightly wider joints on the outer edge of the curve, tighter on the inner. Works for gentle curves (radius > 6 feet). Less effective for tight curves — joint variation becomes too visible.
Strategic edge cutting only
✓ For large formatFor large-format pavers, field pieces lay normally in the straight pattern. Only border/edge pieces are cut to follow the curve. We design the curve radius to minimize edge cut complexity.
Our process for curved walkways:
We stake the curve on-site before laying any pavers, calculate exact material quantities, and confirm the radius works with your chosen paver size — before committing to any cuts. Zero surprise material waste.
