The Trusted Standard

The Most Versatile Paving Material in Florida — When Installed Right

Brick pavers are one of the most requested materials in Southwest Florida — and for good reason. The interlocking system, the durability, the classic aesthetic, and the ability to repair individual units without replacing the entire surface make them a practical, long-lasting investment.

But not all brick paver installations are equal. The difference between a driveway that looks great after 15 years and one that sinks, cracks, and requires constant maintenance comes down to base preparation, material selection, and edge restraint — three areas where budget installations consistently cut corners.

EC Paver Solutions has installed brick pavers across Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Tampa, and Orlando. We specify everything in writing and we don't cut corners.

The Decision Nobody Tells You

Clay vs. Concrete Brick Pavers — What's the Difference?

Most contractors skip this conversation. We start with it — because it's the most important decision in your project.

C

Clay Brick Pavers

Premium — Higher upfront cost

Fired natural clay. Color is part of the clay itself — not a surface pigment. Cannot fade because there's nothing to bleach out. Gets denser and harder with age.

Color never fades — vitrified throughout
Gets harder with age (10,000+ PSI)
Resists staining better than concrete
Classic red, buff, charcoal, and blends
Higher upfront — superior long-term value
Best for: Driveways and high-visibility patios where 15+ years of consistent appearance matters.
P

Concrete Brick Pavers

Most popular — Wider selection

Portland cement, sand, and pigment. Virtually unlimited colors and shapes. Lower upfront cost. Brands like Tremron (Florida-based, widely available) offer excellent products for our market.

Dozens of colors and profiles
Lower upfront material cost
Tremron & Cambridge available locally
Excellent when properly sealed
More pattern and size flexibility
Best for: Pool decks, lanais, and patios where color range and design flexibility are priorities. Sealing required every 3-5 years.

Brick Pavers for Lanais — The Upgrade Most Contractors Ignore

If you have a screened lanai with a plain concrete slab floor — which describes hundreds of thousands of Florida homes — you have an upgrade opportunity almost no contractor actively promotes.

Installing brick pavers over an existing lanai slab transforms the space from an afterthought into a genuine outdoor room. Two options:

Mortar-Set Installation

Thin-set mortar bonded directly to existing slab. Permanent, stable, completely finished look. Best when slab is in good condition.

Pedestal System

Adjustable pedestals with drainage beneath. Ideal for screened enclosures. Pavers can be lifted individually for slab access. More flexible but higher cost.

Design Options

Brick Paver Patterns — Which Is Right for Your Project?

Herringbone 45°

Recommended for driveways

Best for: Driveways

Best load distribution — the V-shaped interlocking geometry distributes vehicle load across multiple pavers. Used in European streets for centuries.

Running Bond

Most versatile

Best for: Patios & walkways

Clean, modern, efficient to install. Works beautifully for patios and walkways where a structured look is preferred.

Basket Weave

Traditional look

Best for: Patios & lanais

Classic and traditional. Pairs of pavers in alternating horizontal and vertical sets. Works best aesthetically on patios and lanai areas.

Circular Feature

Premium

Best for: Focal points

Feature installations around a fountain, tree ring, or courtyard center. Significantly more labor-intensive but creates a genuinely custom, designed look.

Why herringbone matters for driveways

When a car tire rolls over pavers, it creates a shear force that pushes adjacent pavers apart. In a running bond aligned parallel to traffic, this force works directly against joint stability. In 45° herringbone, no joint runs parallel to travel — the interlocking V geometry distributes load across multiple pavers. That's why herringbone has been used in European streets under heavy traffic for centuries.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost to install brick pavers in Florida?+
Total installed cost varies significantly based on paver type, project size, complexity, base requirements, and demo needs — clay pavers run higher than concrete, and larger projects benefit from economies of scale. Because every site and specification is different, we provide a written, itemized quote covering material, base prep, edge restraints, polymeric sand, and sealing before any work begins.
What is the difference between clay and concrete brick pavers?+
Clay pavers are fired natural clay — color is part of the material, never fades, gets denser with age. Concrete pavers offer more color options at lower upfront cost but can fade under Florida UV without regular sealing. For driveways and high-visibility patios, clay is generally the superior long-term choice. We work with both.
How are brick pavers installed professionally?+
Correct sequence: excavation to depth → base compaction in layers → edge restraints at all perimeters → bedding sand or mortar → paver placement in specified pattern → precision cuts at edges → polymeric joint sand → sealing. Each step builds on the previous. Skipping any step — base depth, edge restraints, polymeric sand — creates an installation that fails on a timeline.
Can brick pavers be installed over a lanai slab?+
Yes — and this is one of the most cost-effective outdoor upgrades available. If the existing slab is in good condition, pavers can be mortar-set directly on top (most stable option) or installed on adjustable pedestals with drainage beneath (ideal for screened enclosures). We assess every slab before recommending which approach.
Can you lay brick pavers directly on dirt?+
No. Brick pavers on dirt without a compacted aggregate base will shift, sink, and heave with every rain event in Florida's sandy, high-water-table soil. A proper compacted crushed limestone base is non-negotiable. Any contractor proposing to install over native soil without a proper base is proposing an installation that will fail.
What do you put down before laying pavers?+
Bottom to top: compacted native soil → geotextile fabric → compacted crushed limestone base (4-6 inches for pedestrian, 6-8 inches for vehicles) → 1 inch of coarse bedding sand → pavers → polymeric joint sand → sealer. The bedding sand is set at precise grade and slope for drainage. This system is what allows individual pavers to be lifted and reset if needed.
Are brick pavers slippery when wet?+
Standard tumbled or textured-face pavers provide good natural slip resistance. For pool decks specifically, we specify pavers with enhanced texture rating and penetrating sealer that doesn't create a slick surface film. We never specify smooth-face or polished pavers for any exterior Florida application — they become dangerously slippery when wet.
How much does a 20x20 brick paver patio cost?+
A 20x20 (400 sqft) patio cost depends on paver material, base depth, pattern complexity, and site conditions — concrete pavers run more economical, while clay pavers cost more upfront for their longer-term durability. Both options include full base preparation, edge restraints, polymeric sand, and sealing, all itemized in a written quote so you know exactly what you're getting.
